Readers are leaders. This simple phrase is one of my favorites. It’s also something my students and own children probably get sick of hearing, but it’s the truth. In our classrooms, and in our homes, it’s important that we’re providing the children in our lives with quality books. That why, when Ethicool Books reached out and offered to send me some books, I was very excited. You see, Ethicool creates “remarkable children’s books about the world’s big issues” with a goal to “make our planet more equitable and sustainable”.
Ethicool sent me these books as a gift, but the thoughts, opinions, and views expressed in this post are mine. I would never share something I didn’t use and love.
Big Issues Explained for Little Kids
So, why am I in love with Ethicool Books? First, they get it. They realize that little kids ARE ready to learn about and tackle real world issues. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that not only are world issues and injustices important to me, but that it’s important to me to teach my own children about real world issues from a young age. The founders, Teigan Margetts and Stuart French, have two young boys of their own and think it’s important to discuss big issues with kids.
Sustainable Children’s Books
Second, I love that they have sustainability at the forefront of their mission. Ethicool uses recycled or sustainable sourced paper and soy-based ink. As much as I love books, typically a book purchase means cutting down trees. Additionally, orders are shipped using recyclable or compostable packaging. They are also proud members of 1% for the Planet which is “a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through annual memberships and everyday actions”. I love that I can feel good about purchasing new books for my classroom and family.
Stories Worth Sharing
Third, I love Ethicool because their books are beautiful, meaningful, and present issues in a kid friendly way! My children love the books that we have, and I love the messages that the books are sending to them. I know there are times that I don’t have the words to tackle issues like poverty, toxic masculinity, and privilege. These books provide a wonderful jumping off point.
If you’re a teacher or a parent, I highly recommend checking out the selection of books from Ethicool here.
