Student jobs are a staple of elementary classrooms, but are they really worthwhile? The answer is yes, for a number of reasons. Here are 6 reasons why classroom jobs are important.
It helps students take ownership of the classroom
The first reasons classroom jobs are important is that it helps students take ownership of the classroom. If we want our students to respect each other, the classroom environment, and us, the first thing we should do is give them the chance to help control the environment. Giving them responsibility will make them feel important. It also shows them that this is not your class, but their class as well.
It teaches independence
One of our main goals as teachers is to help students develop more independence. Student jobs do just that. When we give students control over different areas of our classroom, teach them how to do it, and then let them take charge, it can have excellent results. Classroom jobs are just one way let students be independent, but it’s a great start. You can read about more things students can do independently here.
It shows students that you trust them
If we want to build relationships with our students, we need them to trust us. However, I have found that students won’t trust you until you trust them. Giving them classroom jobs and then letting them be in charge of classroom jobs shows them a level of trust. It’s just a start, but it’s an easy way to start to build trust.
It gives them voice and choice
If done the right way, classroom jobs can give students some voice and choice in your classroom. This is another great way to build relationship. When students feel heard, they’re are better able to learn. So, here’s how we can use classroom jobs to give students voice and choice.
- Let students helps decide what jobs you will have.
- Let students help decide how often your class will change jobs.
- Give students the opportunity to pick their own jobs.
- Allow students to tell you if they think of a new job that might be needed.
It makes your life easier
My favorite reason I love classroom jobs is that it makes teachers’ lives easier! If we are willing to give students some more control, than it means there are less things we need to be in charge of. I don’t know about you, but I have enough on my plate without having to water our plants, pass out papers, or tidy the library. Passing these jobs over to students lightens my load.
Students enjoy having class jobs
Lastly, in my experience, students really love having class jobs. I think this is for a lot of the reasons above. It helps them feel like the classroom is theirs. They feel in control and can do things independently. And, they love to be able to help and add value to the classroom.
